Rivers, Blocks, and Bridges to Newark Bay
2023
Addressable LED lights, Arduino computer boards, acrylic paint on MDF, open source code written by Mark Kriegsman.
6' x 8'

Exploring the spatial relationship between our experience in the built environment and its proximity to fresh water sources, Rivers, Blocks, and Bridges to Newark Bay references the street grid of Newark and the surrounding region combined with the paths of the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers as they join to form Newark Bay. This site-specific sculptural and light installation is visible from the street, day and night. During the day, the painted sculptural relief is visible; at night, the LED lighting components provide a moving lighting animation to backlight and complement the sculptural forms. The blueish lighting element provides a visceral connection to light reflecting on the surface of water; the subtly blinking yellow, white, and orange lighting element suggests light from street lamps, traffic, and building windows experienced in the urban landscape at night.
